Today some buddies and i went up to Castroville to visit a ranch where we got a horseback riding lesson, caught chickens and bottlefed a baby pygmy goat. She was like a puppy that doesn't bite or chase anything. She was like 6 weeks old and would run with you and kick her legs in the air and frolic, and she would cry if you got too far away or didn't pick her up. Baby pygmy goats are the cutest things ever and i want 50 of them.
We also found this totally amazing used bookstore that has all kinds of old and out of print books. Lots were from like 1930, and they have 50's editions of every book in the Wizard of Oz series, as well as the Colored Fairy Book series that my sisters and i read as kids.
Coming out of Castroville we ate at this BBQ place that looks like a total hole in the wall but had a very singular atmosphere (we're talking sawdust on the floor) and the most authentic BBQ you will ever find. We had to roll each other out of there. They even sold glass bottles of Crush, remember Crush?
Then because the sunset was gorgeous and we had time, we stopped at a very hidden state beach (you have to drive through artichoke fields to get there) that was very beautiful but must have been where seals go to die b/c there were like 8 skeletons up past the tideline.
In other news, TRADOC has some bullshit regulations.
So Sept 11 is now "Patriot Day"... pretty soon there will be picnics and fireworks every Sept 11 and some islamic terrorist will be saying "Shit, we killed thousands of their citizens and they're having a barbeque!"
I wish we could wear the Air Force's new combat boots. They look tight!
43 pushups in 2 minutes - that's more than i've ever done on a PT test!
Went kayaking yesterday and saw a dead sunfish with a huge bite taken out of it. Everyone seems to think it's the great white shark that has been in the bay lately. The jellies were all out too, the huge luminous ones that chill in the kelp beds. The sea otters were all out eating them and playing. I'm scared to go too near sea otters after hearing about that guy last week who had one jump into his kayak and bite him!
In other news: best track on the best musical soundtrack of all time, CATS included.
Every weekend is a different festival here. Today they were celebrating Italia. There was pizza, cannoli, jewelry, and a tenor singing opera who was just incredible. I think opera is one of the finest forms of art you'll come across. When you have a good singer it's like you're somewhere else and nothing matters but that moment. And when you have a great singer, you can't even believe that you're listening to a person and not a symphony.
So yeah, RIP Pavarotti! You touched a lot of hearts!
